Aldi brings back £3.49 wine that sold out in just four days last year

Aldi has once again slashed the price of one of its popular red wines, which critics have hailed as "incredible."

The supermarket chain says the price of its Specially Selected Cairanne will once again be reduced from £8.49 to just £3.49 across its UK stores for just one week. Between Monday, December 2 and Sunday, December 8, shoppers will be able to stock up on the viral Cairanne French wine for the festive season with the discount, saving them a huge 58% per bottle.

The wine is a blend of 60% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre, and 5% Carignan and has an alcohol by volume (ABV) content of 14%. It is described as being a "rich and layered red" with aromas of forest fruits, plums, black cherry, and damsons, with a "decadent mocha and spice finish".

Aldi put on the same discount last year, although the wine was priced at £8.99, so it gave shoppers a 61% saving instead. The deal was so popular that the supermarket chain was forced to impose a two-bottle limit on customers, but even then, it sold out nationwide in just four days. This was after wine expert, Jane MacQuitty of The Times, hailed the beverage as a "present to the nation" so many will be excited for it to return.

One insider at the supermarket told the Grocer Magazine last year that Aldi was, in fact, "losing money" by offering the discount, so this could be the case for them again this year. This was due to the cost of VAT and other taxes as last year, VAT accounted for around 58p of each bottle sold. Alcohol Duty also accounted for either £2.23 or £2.67 per bottle – depending on whether it was purchased before or after the duty hike in August 2023. According to the report, this meant that Aldi was making just 68p or 24p on every bottle sold before any of its own costs.

The insider said: "Anything under £5 is a very sharp promotion, for Aldi to be all the way down at £3.49 feels out of kilter with what’s needed to drive a profitable category.”

For those curious about the quality of the wine, our Mirror Money editor, Levi Winchester, managed to get her hands on it last year and reviewed it for us. Levi said the aroma of the wine definitely matched the description on the bottle, saying the smell was "overwhelmingly that of red fruits".

Now most importantly was the taste. Levi noted that some cheap red wines can be quite vinegary and harsh, but did not feel this with this bottle saying: "It was smooth, sweet and you could really taste the red fruits."
