New Year’s Day: Full list of shops staying closed including Next, Aldi and John Lewis
There are a number of major high street chains keeping their doors closed this New Year's Day.
The first bank holiday of the year is coming and normally shops like to keep their doors open to the public. However, this year a number of shops have decided to close to give their staff more time with their loved ones over the holiday. To help those who may fancy venturing out on the first day of the year, the Mirror has rounded up a list of all retailers and supermarkets which are planning on keeping their stores closed this New Year's Day.
Aldi
Aldi confirmed back in September that its over 1,000 stores will once again be closed on both Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and on New Year's Day this festive season. Aldi is known for remaining closed on the Christmas bank holidays, so its staff can rest over the festive period. Stores will be open until 6pm on New Year's Eve and normal opening hours will be introduced from January 2.
Poundland
In October, Poundland confirmed that it would keep its stores closed on both Boxing Day and New Year’s Day as a thank you for their staff's hard work over the last year. Normal opening hours will resume on Thursday, January 2.

Next has more than 450 stores across the UK and is known for selling everything from clothing to homeware. Anyone hoping to visit a store today, New Year’s Eve, should know that most sites will open at reduced hours, from 9am to 5pm. All stores will remain closed on January 1.
John Lewis
On New Year's Eve, John Lewis stores will open between 9am and 6pm, though all John Lewis stores, including those in major shopping centres across the UK, will be closed on January 1. John Lewis advises shoppers to use the store locator tool on its website to check the opening hours for individual stores.
Home Bargains
Discount retailer Home Bargains said it would be closing its stores on New Year's Day to give back to their workers. Earlier this year, the retailer issued a statement saying: "We know how hard all our colleagues have worked throughout the year. Being a family-run business, we recognise the importance of spending quality time with our loved ones. Therefore, we feel it is only right to support our valued store teams by giving them extended time off around Christmas and New Year."
On New Year's Eve, the shop will operate under its regular hours before closing on January 1, 2025. It will reopen as normal on January 2, 2025.
Waitrose
Waitrose confirmed it would shut the majority of its stores on New Years Day with only a handful staying open. Those which remain open will continue operating via Deliveroo and Uber Eats. Check with your local Waitrose to find out if it is one of the branches opening on New Year's Day. New Year's Eve opening hours will also vary. However, stores will generally open at 8am and close between 6pm and 7pm.
Marks and Spencer
All M&S food stores will be closed on January 1, New Year's Day giving its staff a break but stores will be opening on New YEar's Eve. There are a variety of different opening hours for Marks and Spencer stores, with some open from 8am until 7pm or from 9am until 5pm. You should check your local store using the M&S store finder on its website.
