M&S shoppers say ‘it’s carnage’ as ‘hundreds’ queue outside supermarket stores

M&S shoppers have said long queues at supermarkets over the weekend caused "chaos" – and it looks set to repeat today.

The majority of Brits have managed to get most of their Christmas shopping out of the way, but many will still need the odd one or two bits for the big day. Christmas Day falls on a Wednesday this year, which made last weekend incredibly busy for those picking up their final bits.

Over the weekend, shoppers reported mass queues of "hundreds of people" outside M&S stores across the county, with these major queues continuing today. One shopper took to X – formerly Twitter – to share their experience at the upmarket retailer over the weekend.

They shared: "We were in M&S yesterday and there were actual queues just to get down the aisles, not just the tills. It was carnage." Another shared: "Christmas madness! A third said: "I was in M&S yesterday and it was like Armageddon. The staff were brilliant. Friendly, helpful and visible. Some of the customers, however, were awful!"

Another shopper said they got stuck in the queues going into the store's carpark so decided to turn back, saying: "Good luck to anyone thinking they're getting close to the M&S megastore at Wolstanton today – I just got stuck in the queues on the A500 and ended up turning back!!" A fourth said they nearly had a "mental breakdown" as the store was "so packed" they could not move because of the queues down the aisles.

A fifth shopper said: "M&S, collecting the Christmas order: It was every man for himself, Confused man on the phone to his missus (?), saying he didn’t know what to get and where it was, Old people congregating to have a chat IN THE MIDDLE OF THE AISLE, Lists aplenty, Long Queues."

However, even with the reports, shoppers remained undeterred and many chanced this morning too. One X user said: "In M&S at 6 and had to queue to get in as so many there, crazy, but that's it. Shopping done. If we haven't got it, we won't be having it. Happy Christmas Eve Eve!" Another said: "The real lads are queuing outside M&S Ashton at 5:57am."

Even with the long queues, many shoppers said although their experience was stresfull, M&S staff at the stores were "incredible". One X user shared: "The @marksandspencer logistics and procurement elves are INCREDIBLE Queues all the way down to the bridge, can't move for people in store, that way since 8am. But shelves full, restocked as soon as as emptied, even by mid-afternoon. Bloody brilliant logistics management"
